Pomona College moved to Claremont in 1889, taking over an unfinished hotel left empty by a land bust. In 1925 it became the first member of the Claremont Colleges, a group modeled on Oxford that now numbers five undergraduate colleges and two graduate schools on adjoining campuses. Together they enroll several thousand students in a city of about 37,000.
